How Upin & Ipin movie made it to Oscar 2020 nomination list for Best Animated Film!

Earlier this year, Boboiboy director, Nizam Razak made a bold claim that Malaysian animation was better than Hollywood.

Reasons given included local animator’s speed and ability to deliver quality work with just a fraction of the time and budget of a blockbuster film.

While there were some skeptics at the time, it turns out that this might be true as the Upin & Ipin movie has made it to Oscar 2020 nomination list for best Animated Feature Film!

“Thank you Malaysians for the incredible support of this movie,” reads the caption as it announced that Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal was listed among 32 animated films around the world for the Oscars 2020 nomination.

The movie produced by Les’ Copaque Production Sdn Bhd was submitted in the Animated Feature Film category for the 92nd Academy Awards that’ll take place next in February next year.

Alongside big-name films such as Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4, the locally made film is officially in the running for best Animated Feature Film.

However, it is NOT an Oscar nominee yet. The nominations for the Animated Feature Film category will be announced on 13th January 2020.

That does not mean that this is any less of an achievement
though. Each year, hundreds of submissions are sent to the Academy Awards.
To be shortlisted is an extremely prestigious honour.

This would also be the FIRST Malaysian animated film to make it to an Oscars list.

Malaysia’s first Oscar bid was back in 2004 with Puteri Gunung Ledang, but the film failed to earn a nomination.

So what are the chances of Upin & Ipin getting the coveted
Oscar nom?

We’d say it’s pretty  good.

Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal also made headlines in September when the movie won best feature film in Monteal International Film Festival Animation 2019 (ANIMAZE).

Since it’s release in March 2019, the Upin & Ipin movie has also been rapidly conquering cinemas around the region.

While it became the second highest grossing animated film in Malaysia, the movie also managed to crack into Indonesian and Vietnamese theaters alongside Singapore and Brunei.

What’s more, the Mandarin dubbed version of the film is also planned for released in China this year.

That’s not all. To meet the nomination criteria, Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal will be screened in Los Angeles, USA from 9th November.

So, American audiences can soon meet and fall in love with Malaysia’s favourite twins!

We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that Upin & Ipin make it to the final Oscars nomination!

It would be AMAZING to see Malaysian faces walk the red carpet amongst the most glamorous faces in the world and hopefully bring home the coveted golden statuette.

Congratulate the Upin & Ipin team on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
