Plant 10 trees before you can graduate in the Philippines

10 cheers for Filipino forests because for graduating students, planting trees are a requirement to graduate from high school and college!

It’s not only the forests that are getting these newly planted trees, but also mangroves, abandoned mining sites, military ranges and even selected urban areas in the Philippines.

Gary Alejano the Magdalo Party-list Rep presented his bill to the House of Commons called the “Graduation Legacy for the Environment Act,” with plans to overcome the deforestation crisis which the Philippines is facing.

It is expected about 175 million new trees would be planted yearly, as there are more than 500,000 students graduating each year.

Through this bill, also known as the House Bill 8728, the Education departments will partner up with various Environmental bodies to ensure the planting process is a success.

What about us Malaysians? The only way we can graduate is to publish papers.

Because you know la we Malaysians are held to a higher degree (get it?).

We too are facing deforestation at alarming rates like the Filipinos who lost 50% in the 20th century, as we suffered a loss of 25% of our forests in the last 17 years.

Though we did try replanting trees back in 2017 SEA Games when we planted a tree for each medal won. Hmmm..

Maybe one day we too can adopt this bill?
