JOHOR BARU, 8 Aug 2016:

A security guard who claimed to be the Sultan of Malacca pleaded not guilty in the magistrate’s court here today to three counts of cheating.

Sabirin Yusuf, 48, was charged with cheating Poniran Sumardi by deceiving the latter into believing that he (Sabirin) was the Malacca Sultan and able to get him (Poniran) a set of the Malacca royal attire, prompting Poniran to hand him a total of RM700.

He was alleged to have committed the offence on three occassions in May last year at No 129, Jalan Pesona 12, Taman Pelangi Indah, here.

The charges were made under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides an imprisonment for up to 10 years and with whipping, and is liable to fine, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Asmah Zainal Ariffin, who prosecuted, offered bail at RM5,000 on each count.

However, lawyer Ahmad Yusri Ahmad Fuad , representing Sabirin, asked for a lower bail as his client had two wives and 16 children to support.

Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias set bail at RM10,000 in one surety and fixed Sept 4 for mention.
