SANDAKAN, Feb 11, 2016:
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre said today it had nothing to do with the Sun Bear Run scheduled for Feb 28 in Kota Kinabalu.
BSBCC chief executive officer Wong Siew Te said in a statement, he found out from the organiser of the event that the run would not benefit the centre or sun bears.
He said it was important for the public and potential participants to know that the Sun Bear Run was just a theme and the event was being organised by a local company and an event management firm.
“BSBCC is neither taking part in this event nor has anything to do with it. We regret to learn that this run is not a charity run where the profit will help the work to conserve sun bears in Sabah.
“We wish to advice the public to be clear about the nature of similar events so that they do not end up paying and taking part thinking that they are helping wildlife,” he said. BSBCC, which is based in Sepilok near here, was officially opened to the public two years ago and works towards rehabilitating rescued sun bears, carrying out awareness, conservation and research activities.
It is said to be the only facility of its kind in the world and is currently caring for 37 rescued bears.
