KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10, 2016:
PAS Ulama council was disappointed by the action of Paya Jaras assemblyman Mohd Khairuddin Othman dressing up as the Taoist deity Cao Guo Jiu.
The council’s deputy, Datuk Dr Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, said PAS members should be prudent in actions related to religion as it might invite problems and slander.
“Referring to the case involving YB Khairuddin Othman, who wore religious clothing resembling the deity worshiped by Taoist and later sparked controversy among the Muslim public, was a disappointing incident.
“Therefore, the PAS Ulama council hopes that all PAS members be more sensible in any action that involves religion in so that it does not invoke problems and slander to all religions that exists here in our beloved nation,” he said in a statement, today.
When pictures of Khairuddin, who is Selangor PAS secretary, dressed as the deity during a Chinese New Year celebratory event in Wangsa Permai, went viral on social media, it caused a controversy.
Khairuddin later issued an apology after receiving much criticism for his actions.
The PAS Ulama council, however, notes that Khairuddin’s action was not meant to undermine any religious belief but rather a misunderstanding.
“However, the Central PAS Ulama council feels that what had happened was not intended to defy religious restrictions nor undermine Islamic faith.
“Rather it happened only because of a misunderstanding and not observing the position that resembles other forms of religious practice,” said Nik Zawawi.
