SARIKEI, Feb 9, 2016:

A man’s attempt to save a youth from drowning after being hit by strong waves at the Belawai beach near here yesterday failed when both were swept out to sea.

Sarikei police chief Superintendent Boniman Margiman told Bernama the man who had braved the rough waters was Amy Amira Pandita, 27, while the youth was Muhammad Hanis Ahmad Tajudin, a student of SMK Belawai.

Both victims, from Kampung Jerijih, are still missing and feared drowned.

Boniman said they were taking a dip with several other friends when the incident took place at 6pm.

“They were hit by strong waves and were swept away but their friends managed to save themselves,” he said, adding that search efforts were ongoing.

Meanwhile, in Sandakan, a fisherman, who was reported missing on Monday, was found safe in the Kuala Gum Gum area, Sungai Beruang early this morning.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station acting chief Shahriel Nizam Kamari said the victim, known as Ali Sunar Oto, 36, was found by villagers at 2am.

According to a report lodged by Ali’s elder brother, the victim was said to have left for sea alone to catch fish on Sunday morning and was supposed to have returned by evening.
