The last two episodes in which the Menteri Besar was replaced in Selangor and Terengganu took place in very different scenarios compared with the removal of Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) lecturer Dr Maszlee Malik said that both Menteris Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Said and Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had maintained low profiles after being ousted.
“These two cases are rather different compared with what has happened to Mukhriz. He has leverage as former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s son, which gives him the extra credit.
“Mukhriz was not considered as a fighter during his time in Umno Youth but his father’s image lent him a lot of weight and gave him a lot of credit in his political career.
“There was no such leverage for the former Selangor and Terengganu Menteris Besar,” said the political analyst in an interview with Malay daily Sinar Harian.
According to the report, Maszlee was confident that after the replacement of Mukhriz with Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, Umno members would no longer dare to criticise Umno President and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“The question whether Ahmad Bashah can compete with Mukhriz is not the main priority of Umno now. Mukhriz’s removal is a warning for all Umno leaders not to challenge Najib.
“With his authority, Najib managed to get hold of all state leaders under Barisan Nasional (BN),” he claimed.
“For sure, it will be difficult for Ahmad Bashah to be a good replacement but if the federal government is able to channel a huge number of projects to Kedah, then he will be become popular,” he said in the report.
In May 2014, Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman was elected as Terengganu Menteri Besar replacing Ahmad Said while four months later, Azmin was sworn-in as the new Selangor Menteri Besar replacing Abdul Khalid.
