Sungai Tiang assemblyman Datuk Suraya Yaakob said she will not protest if newly-minted Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah dropped her from the state executive council (exco) line-up.
Suraya said Ahmad Bashah had been mandated by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to lead the state administration and as an assemblyman, she fully supported the decision.
“He should be able to choose his own exco members, and I will certainly support his choices as he has the mandate from the party president and the state Umno leadership.
“If dropped, I will continue with my life as before, after all I have served as an assemblyman for two terms. Surely there’s no need for me to protest,” she told reporters at Istana Anak Bukit here today.
Ahmad Bashah was sworn in today in front of the Kedah Regency Council as the new Kedah Menteri Besar following the resignation of Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir yesterday.
Meanwhile, Bandar Baharu assemblyman Datin Nor Sabrina Mohd Noor would continue her official duty as exco until Ahmad Bashah made a decision on her position.
“It’s the prerogative of the Menteri Besar, but as exco members we will continue with our duties until it has been decided.
“If I am dropped as exco, I will continue to serve the people. God willing, I will continue to support the state Umno leadership and the state administration.
“Most importantly, we continue to serve the people as they look up to the Barisan Nasional government,” she said, adding that she was relieved that the political crisis that lasted for two weeks was now resolved.
She also thanked Mukhriz for having led the state and hoped that Ahmad Bashah could continue the legacy left behind.
“We have experienced tremendous turmoil during the 14 days and today is a point of closure now that Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah has been appointed as MB.
“Let bygones be bygones. The most important thing is to serve the people and not to find fault with others.
“I hope that the leadership can be reconciled as we continue to serve the state,” she said.
Deputy Defence Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum, who attended the swearing-in ceremony, expressed hope that everyone would look forward to better days for Kedah.
“Kedah is still behind other states in terms of development.
“Anyone who assumes responsibility as Menteri Besar has a formidable task.
“I hope Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah would devote full attention to the state and improve the welfare of the people,” he said.
