ALOR SETAR, Feb 4, 2016:Bakar Bata assemblyman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah was sworn in as the new Kedah Menteri Besar this morning before Kedah Regency Council chairman, Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah. He is the 12th Menteri Besar of Kedah. The ceremony, which was held at Istana Anak Bukit, here, puts an end to the political crisis which had been plaguing the state over the last two weeks. Yesterday, Ahmad Bashah’s predecessor, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, resigned after losing the majority support of assemblymen in the state. The turmoil started after a group of Kedah Umno division leaders and others held a press conference on Jan 20 to declare their loss of confidence in Mukhriz’s leadership. The loss of confidence was announced by Ahmad Bashah, who is also deputy liaison committee chief, after a closed door meeting with the politicians. Ahmad Bashah was born on Oct 10, 1950 and he is also the current Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism. He is also the Umno Alor Setar division chief. Ahmad Bashah previously held the position of Kedah Umno liaison committee chairman from Jan 1, 2011 to July 25, 2013. He was also Alor Merah assemblyman from 1995 to 2004 and Bakar Bata assemblyman from 2004 to date. On Dec 13, 1999, he was appointed as Kedah State executive councillor holding the position of chairman of the Housing, Local Government and Farming Committee. After the 11th General Election in 2004, he was again appointed an exco member but now held the portfolio of the housing, local government and environment chairman. On May 15, 2013, he was appointed as a senator and subsequently appointed as a deputy minister.
