KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3, 2016:
Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak commended Kedah Umno as having demonstrated their support for the principles of party unity and discipline.
He said that the party and government must be disciplined and work together as a united team to combat the economic and security challenges Malaysia currently faces, and to deliver on the promises made at the last general election when Barisan Nasional was given a mandate by the people.
The statement came in the wake of former Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s resignation this morning.
He noted that Mukhriz had to resign as the latter had lost the majority in the state assembly.
“This was due to a lack of confidence in his leadership, both as Menteri Besar and state party leader, and concerns that better preparations were needed to retain Kedah in the 14th General Election,” said Najib.
Mukhriz is to be succeeded by Bakar Bata assemblyman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah as Menteri Besar.
