ALOR SETAR, Feb 3, 2016:
Kedah’s future Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah explained that he was appreciating the King’s speech during a palace ceremony and denied that he sleeping as what was said online.
Ahmad Bashah had been ridiculed by netizens for allegedly falling asleep as seen in a video recording which went viral.
He said it was unlikely for someone to doze off while sitting in the front row during an important event.
“I was sitting with all the VIPs, including Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir. Surely I won’t do that.
“The allegations were untrue and the purpose is nothing more than trying to cast a negative light on me,” he said at a press conference in Alor Setar.
Ahmad Bashah added that he had explained to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on the matter.
He noted that even Najib had closed his eyes momentarily while talking and there was nothing unusual about it.
He also gave assurance that he would stay awake during the swearing-in ceremony at Istana Anak Bukit, following a remark by former Menteri Besar Mukhriz.
Mukhriz had said, “Hopefully Ahmad Bashah will not fall asleep during the swearing-in ceremony.”
Describing the comment as mischievous, Ahmad Bashah, who is also Kedah Umno deputy chairman, said he would not take offence even though he thought it was inappropriate to say such things.
“Maybe there are other intentions behind the advice, but it’s not a nice gesture,” said the Bakar Bata assemblyman.
