KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3, 2016:
Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah may choose to retain his position as Senator although he would be sworn in as Kedah Menteri Besar, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
Azalina, who is the Minister responsible for Parliament, said that the matter did not go against the law and was transcribed within the Constitution.
“Following the appointment, the government has taken into account of his (Ahmad Bashah) position as a member of the Dewan Negara (Senator) and also as the Bakar Bata assemblyman.
“The Federal Constitution does not say or restrict any member of the Dewan Negara to hold the position of Menteri Besar.
“Therefore, he has the option to remain or let go of his position as Senator,” she said in a statement, today.
Kedah State Secretary Datuk Bakar Din today announced Ahmad Bashah as the new Kedah Menteri Besar after Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir stepped down from the post.
Ahmad Bashah later announced his resignation as the Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister and Senator, effective today.
Bashah said his resignation letter had already been delivered to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.
“So, it is official that I have relieved both positions, to be frank, my position as Senator has not yet expired, but I will be taking the oath (as Menteri Besar) tomorrow, so both positions have to let go,” he said.
