KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31, 2016:

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed disappointment at the method by which Swiss authorities alleged that state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was found to have misappropriated funds.

However, he said, the Attorney-General had been tasked with meeting Swiss authorities to obtain information on the matter.

“We have passed the task of obtaining that information through our Attorney-General who will meet with Switzerland’s chief prosecutor.

“And I hope such information be channelled through official government channels because it is based on government to government,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association (Mita) Tourism Fair 2016 at KLCC here today.

On Friday, reports emerged claiming Switzerland’s chief prosecutor had said that a criminal investigation into 1MDB had revealed that about US$4 billion (RM16.6 billion) appeared to have been misappropriated from Malaysian state companies.

“By making open statements like that, to me, it is not good because it will not only cause a rift in relationship between the two countries but also lead to biased media reports,” added Ahmad Zahid.
