KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29, 2016:

Four Umno branches in Kedah have warned the state divisional leaders to face a backlash from voters for trying to oust the state’s beleaguered Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

The four Kedah Umno branches, in Jalan Badlishah, Bandar Laguna, Kg Pinang and Taman Bunga Raya, under the Merbok division, expressed support for Mukhriz.

In their warning, the branches said Kedah Umno would pay the price for trying to get rid of Mukhriz without consent of the grassroots.

Jalan Badlishah branch leader Anuar Abdul Hamid said Umno members who supported Mukhriz would travel across the state and reach out to other Umno branches in the state.

He said many Umno branches in Kedah were unhappy that they had not been consulted on the decision to oust Mukhriz.

“Party members at the grassroots are unhappy that they have been ignored in such an important matter.

“Divisional leaders have no right to get rid of Mukhriz without consent from party members at the branch level,” he said in a joint statement issued today.

He added that Mukhriz was a dynamic leader who clicked with the youngsters in the state.

The ex-army man said this was evident from the outpouring of support for Mukhriz in the wake of the crisis, including a planned gathering at Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Star on Sunday (Jan 31) and Feb 1.

Mukhriz is expected to be ousted after Kedah Umno deputy liaison chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah announced recently that the state’s Umno leaders wanted him to be removed.

It is believed that Umno president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has put forward three names of candidates for the Kedah Menteri Besar’s post, according to a report inBerita Harian.

The Malay daily reported that the three candidates were Guar Chempedak assemblyman Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail, Ayer Hangat assemblyman Datuk Mohd Rawi Abdul Hamid and Bayu assemblyman Datuk Azmi Che Husin.

The names were handed over at the meeting between Najib and Kedah Regency Council chairman Tunku Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah this morning.
