JOHOR BARU, Jan 27, 2016:
The Sultan of Johor’s name will soon be enshrined in the country’s premier football team, Johor Darul Ta’azim’s (JDT) new stadium and sports facility in Iskandar Puteri here.
The new RM200 million stadium will be named as the Sultan Ibrahim Larkin Stadium in honour of the state’s ruler.
Tunku Mahkota Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim said the new stadium would be built by international property developer Forest City, which was also the team’s sponsors.
“The development area covers a 11ha-site that will include the sports stadium with hotels, apartments, shopping malls, rugby, tennis and futsal facilities.
“The new stadium will be part of the JDT Sports City as I want JDT to be the premier name in the sports arena,” he said during a “Meet The Fans Session” at the Tan Sri Datuk Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium in Larkin here today.
Tunku Ismail, who is also JDT’s owner, said the addition of “Larkin” to the stadium’s name was due to sentimental reasons.
“I can’t part with the ‘Larkin’ name and it will be an addition to the new stadium in Iskandar Puteri,” said the 31-year-old crown prince.
The highly-anticipated new stadium will have a maximum capacity of up to 45,000 spectators and ample parking facilities.
The Forest City project developers, Country Garden Pacificview Sdn Bhd will be given the responsibility to build the stadium.
Tunku Ismail said the new stadium would address any shortcomings in the older stadium in Larkin.
“The plan is to house the main JDT team at the new stadium and move the JDT 2 team to the stadium in Larkin.
“The JDT 3 and JDT 4 teams will then use the Pasir Gudang Stadium for their needs,” he added.
