KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27, 2016:
The Coalition of Free and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) has lauded the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for its unrelenting effort in upholding justice in the pursuit of truth involving the RM2.6 billion donation.
Its chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said the group fully supported MACC’s decision to bring the matter before its Operations Evaluation Panel for revision.
“Bersih 2.0 is confident that the MACC has conducted the probe thoroughly. Now it is time for the MACC to expose the case to the public.
“All Malaysians have the right to know the truth which can only be exposed by the MACC,” she said in a statement today.
She added Bersih 2.0 was also confident that all Malaysians stood behind the MACC on the matter, which enabled it to regain the trust in terms of transparency and truth.
“The step taken by MACC is exemplary for a public institution that is free, and empowered integrity and justice.
“This is a step to be followed towards confidence and support of the public.”
She added the move would also help the country restore its ratings in the corruption perception index which had fallen.
“This opportunity can only come once. Seize it now before it is too late.”
Earlier, the coalition also expressed its shock over Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali’s move to clear Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from any wrongdoing.
The group demanded for the disclosure of those involved in this sequence of events, as well as the specific identities of donors.
“As the Attorney-General’s Chambers was compromised in July last year, Bersih 2.0 is concerned that the Public Accounts Committee probe will also produce the same results (clearance of Najib), after he restructured the composition of Members of Parliament in the committee.
“Bersih 2.0 urges the PAC to investigate 1Malaysia Development Bhd in detail so that the people are given proper answers,” the group’s steering committee said in a statement.
