AYER HITAM, Jan 27, 2016:Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir is not one to go down without a fight. That is the message that came across loud and clear from the embattled leader as he addressed a crowd of some 500 people in Kampung Sanglang, here, last night. Laced with cynical remarks to what is being said about him and the political turmoil in the state presently, Mukhriz declared that as long as he has the support of the people in Kedah, he would continue to fulfill his duty as Menteri Besar. “As long as there is life in my body, I will continue to fight for the rakyat. Even if I was offered things, perhaps a higher post at the federal level, I choose not to betray the people of Kedah,” he told the crowd. Earlier in his speech, Mukhriz hit out at the reason behind a majority of the state’s Umno leaders having declared they had lost confidence in his leadership. “Why am I being dropped? Because it’s so hard to see me, so hard to make an appointment, so what is the solution, drop me as MB. I was told that Mukhriz spends too much time in KL, the solution? Drop him,” Mukhriz said. He explained that the problems they mentioned were not difficult ones to solve, noting that the problems were not in anyway related to his integrity as a leader. “I have no scandals, my wife is here, I have no weird scandals. I am declaring it now, don’t believe me? Ask my wife,” he said, to the applause of the audience. Mukhriz added that neither did he have any corruption scandals to his name, pointing out that he hated corrupt practices. The son of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad then claimed that what could be the reason for the conflict was him being vocal in speaking the truth. The Ayer Hitam assemblymen claimed that those who spoke the truth would be threatened with dismissal. “This has happened,” he added, before continuing to relate his conversation with former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. “I asked what did you do wrong Tan Sri. He said the same thing, for upholding the truth, suddenly he became the victim,” Mukhriz said. He expressed that he could not understand how Umno could grow stronger if there were those who could not be chided even when they were faced with the truth. Mukhriz, in his speech, also stressed that he was not afraid of whatever action that would be taken against him, stating that he was on the side of the truth. Meanwhile, he also asked the media not to speculate and not to report things that were not true. Sarcastically, Mukhriz chided the various reports that have been released since the MB fiasco unfolded, specifically those that quoted sources. Apart from that, Mukhriz stated that he hoped what was happening in Kedah now would not affect democracy in the party. “If people were to follow this style, no position is safe, we are afraid that there will come a time where a group of branch chiefs call for a vote of no confidence against their division chiefs. “What is happening to me could also be a warning shot to other state leaders so they follow the flow,” Mukhriz said. The general sentiment from the speech Mukhriz gave tonight was that he was determined to carry out his duty as Menteri Besar, as he had also laid down the various efforts he had undertaken prior to Barisan Nasional (BN) recapturing the state in 2013. Mukhriz told the crowd how he had worked tirelessly prior to the general election, and that he had also opted to contest in Ayer Hitam which was not an easy seat to win, according to the feedback he received at the time. His reasoning, however, was that if his comrades were to have to contest in difficult seats, he would have to set an example of contesting in a difficult seat himself. Prior to the speech, Mukhriz attended a Yassin recital and Solat Hajat at the Kampung Sanglang mosque.
