BATU CAVES, Jan 24, 2016:
The 126th Thaipusam celebrations in the Sri Maha Mariamman temple at Batu Caves has gone on smoothly as of 5pm today despite terror threats and rumours spread through social media and WhatsApp messages.
The celebrations kept to its colourful, musical and festive-like atmosphere inspite of the heavy presence of police and army personnel in the vicinity.
The place was packed with devotees, tourists and processions, as many of them made their way up the steep flight of 272 steps.
There were also many Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) trucks by the main road in front of Batu Caves, giving the impression to everyone that security was taken very seriously at this year’s celebrations.
It reported recently that police had begun patrolling the area since Jan 15 to ensure the area’s safety.
According to a police source there was no reason for alarm as there were no untoward incidents.
Earlier, MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said there had been 1.4 million visitors to Batu Caves since Jan 15.
“Batu Caves is the temple that recieves the most number of visitors for Thaipusam besides those in Penang, Ipoh and Sungai Petani.
“Yes there was a security concern this time which stemmed from rumours.
“But I would like to thank police and specifically the IGP for their work in guaranteeing our security and keeping the place safe, so that the people can carry out their vows,” he said during a Press conference here today.
