SKUDAI, Jan 21, 2016:
Two construction workers were rescued by firemen after being stranded for more than three hours atop of a 40-metre floodlight pole while performing installation work at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) stadium grounds here early today.
The incident occurred at 1.30am, where the two workers, aged 22 and 23, were stranded on the maintenance platform on top of the floodlight poles.
A Johor Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said they received a distress call at 1.43am and immediately dispatched a team from the Pulai fire station.
“The team arrived at the location within 10 minutes and checks revealed that the platform gears used by the workers were damaged.
“The workers did not dare to descend manually using brakes and we employed airbags at the bottom of the pole,” said the spokesperson.
The victims, assisted by firemen, were lowered safely at 4.55am by manually using the platform gear’s brake.
It is learnt that the floodlights were commissioned by UTM as they will play host to the annual inter-varsity games this year.
