KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21, 2016:
The recent delineation exercise in Sarawak has revealed some shocking results, said Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, based on the analysis by the Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis Project (Merap).
“Based on the voting trends observed in the 13th General Election, Barisan Nasional has a strong chance of winning 10 out of the 11 new seats created by the re-delineation exercise.
“This has created BN friendly seats while the average constituency there would shrink between 25% and 47%.
“There has been a worsening imbalance in the number of voters in each constituency, making a mockery of the one person one vote one value principle,” she said at a press conference here today.
She said both Bersih 2.0 and Merap reiterated that the delineation exercise in Sarawak contradicted the 13th Schedule of the Federal Constitution.
“This is by ignoring Section 2(c) which requires all constituencies in the same state should be ‘approximately equal’.
“It’s giving undue regard and weight to political considerations in driving boundaries, which is not a specified condition under Section 2.
“It also fails to provide adequate information to affected voters, as required under Section 4.”
She said they once again called for the resignation of the entire Election Commission.
“This is to do with their failure to uphold the integrity of our electoral system.
“We are disappointed that despite the EC’s consistent failures, the new EC chairman was chosen from within the ranks of the commission.”
