JOHOR BARU, Jan 16, 2016:
Police have increased their presence in the main areas of Johor today as an enhanced security measure, following the recent terrorist attacks in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Police personnel, some in full operation gear, were deployed to busy areas in the city centre, and other major parts of the state.
The main areas were shopping centres, entertainment centres, air, land and sea entry and exit points such as the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and the Second Link, Stulang ferry jetty, Pasir Gudang port, Kukup pier and also Senai International Airport.
Johor police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the measure was to assure the public that the police took such threats seriously.
“The state police are prepared to protect the public and deal with any threat to ensure the safety of the state,” he said in a statement today.
Wan Ahmad said the measures were also taken following the order by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to provide the highest level of security control nationwide in light of the Jakarta incident.
“We (police) request the public not to panic when they see police personnel carrying firearms in public as it is only a temporary measure.
“The public can also assist us by providing information of any suspicious activity related to terrorism.”
