JOHOR BARU, Jan 15, 2016:
Police have described the verbal abuse by a parent of a teacher at a primary vernacular school in Mersing in Johor as an incident caused by a misunderstanding and not racism.
This follows a police report lodged by the 49-year-old teacher concerned on January 13, claiming that the parent attacked and verbally abused her in the teacher’s room at SJK (C) Pai Chee.
The teacher, identified as Salina Daud, had also alleged that the school’s management team had failed to protect her as a teacher during the ordeal.
The police report has since gone viral on social media, with many seeing the issue as being racial.
In the report, the father had came to the teacher’s room on January 13 at 12.20pm and attacked the teacher by throwing some school exercise books that were piled up on her desk, before scolding her.
The father, who was apparently angry at another incident where his son was reprimanded for cursing the teacher on January 5, was later restrained by two male teachers.
The report was also accompanied with a letter to the Mersing district education officer dated November 20 last year alleging unfair practices by the school’s headmistress in a separate issue.
Johor police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said police had investigated the matter shortly after receiving a police report from the teacher.
“The matter between the father of one of the pupils and the teacher was due to a misunderstanding and did not have any elements of racism,” he said.
Wan Ahmad said police took the issue seriously as there were allegations that it was racially-motivated following its dissemination on social media.
“Police were also concerned when the issue cropped-up and went viral as the alleged incident involved two races.
Wan Ahmad said the public should also play its part and stop the issue from going out of hand on social media.
He said the investigating team had met with the parties concerned and the public should leave it to the police to complete the investigations.
Police are investigating the case under Section 509 of the Penal Code for the uttering of words or showing of gestures intended to insult the modesty of a person.
