JOHOR BARU, Jan 12, 2016:
A 54-year-old welfare department officer pleaded not guilty today to submitting false claims of RM5,000 for the supply of uniforms over two years ago.
Syed Mohd Abdul Ghani Syed Ali, who was attached to the Mersing district welfare department, was charged at the Johor Baru Sessions Court with submitting false claims of RM5,000.
He is said to have committed the offence on Sept 24, 2013 for the supply of uniforms to the Mersing welfare department’s sports and recreation club.
The charge was earlier read to the accused by a court interpreter in front of Judge Mohamad Haldar Abdul Aziz.
According to the charge sheet, Syed Mohd Abdul Ghani allegedly committed the offence on Oct 8, 2013, between 8am and 11am at the Mersing district welfare department office in Johor with intent to deceive his department.
He was charged under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and, if convicted, will be punishable under Section 24 of the same Act.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Norfazlin Hamdan proposed a RM15,000 bail for Syed Mohd.
However, his counsel M. Vinodharan requested for a lower bail as his client has eight children to care for.
Mohamad Haldar set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and fixed February 25 as the next mention date.
