ALOR SETAR, Jan 10, 2016:
The Road Safety Department has urged motorcyclists not to ignore wearing helmets when going to the mosque for prayers, especially Friday prayers.
Its director-general Abd Ghafar Yusof said that observations had shown that only few motorcyclists wore helmets when going to the mosque.
“When they go to their workplaces they wear their safety helmets but when they go to the mosques they do not wear helmets. The risk they take when they are on the road without safety helmets is very high.
“We want them to take this matter seriously and we feel that monitoring by the authorities is needed to raise awareness,” he told reporters after officiating at the state-level “Long Short Walk” safe walking campaign here, today.
He said in Kedah for example, almost 80% of accidents that occurred involved motorcycles and among the causes were beating the red light.
According to him, statistics showed there were 3,223 fatalities involving motorcyclists and pillion riders from January till September 2014 and 3,098 such fatalities during the same period last year.
