KOTA BARU, Jan 8, 2016:

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) is urging Kelantan police to free Kelantan PSM chairman Khairul Nizam Abd Ghani.

Khairul Nizam, who is also a PSM committee member, was arrested by police at his home in Kota Baru, Kelantan, at 10am today.

In a statement today, Pemuda Sosialis secretary Kesavan PS said the move by police in arresting Khairul Nizam was a violation of human rights.

“This is the second time he has been arrested in the span of two weeks after his first arrest on Dec 28 last year.

“Pemuda Sosialis condemns the action by police because such intimidation against activists who fight for issues and the rakyat’s rights is also a violation of human rights,” he stated.

Khairul Nizam was made to understand that he will be taken to the Johor Baru Police Headquarters not knowing the offence he committed.

“It is still not known what section Khairul was arrested under. Intimidation against activists still continues in 2016.

“We urge police to free Khairul immediately and if his actions are against the law, make a claim in court and not just punish him straight away,” he added.

On Dec 28, Khairul Nizam was detained at IPD Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur to assist in police investigations.

However, he was released the following day after the remand order was rejected by the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court.

It was believed that during Khairul Nizam’s first arrest, there was no further investigation and the move by police to apply for a remand was just to punish him.
