The hot and dry weather in Perlis and Kedah is expected to befall the entire peninsular from the end of January till March this year.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Madius Tangau said the same situation was expected to occur in Sabah and parts of Limbang and Miri in Sarawak.
“This situation is caused by a strong El Nino phenomenon which is taking place and is expected to continue till the first quarter of 2016.
“The strong El Nino phenomenon may cause a decrease in rainfall of between 20% and 60% and a rise in temperature of between 0.5 degrees Celsius and 2.0 degrees Celsius compared to normal,” he said in a statement today.
He said members of the public were encouraged to conserve water and reduce outdoor activities during the warm weather.
