KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6, 2016:
PAS Syura Council has decided that the Islamist party will neither join nor collaborate with Umno in Barisan Nasional (BN) after conducting discussions on Friday.
Its secretary, Datuk Dr Nik Mohd Zawawi Salleh, said that PAS would still continue its agenda in cooperating with any party that leaned towards piety and kindness.
“PAS Ulama Syura Council, which met on Jan 2, has agreed to continue the cooperation agenda with any party towards piety and kindness in order to strengthen Islam and our struggle.
“One of the Islamic fundamentals which PAS holds onto is to cooperate and help each other towards piety and kindness.
“Syura Council also stressed that PAS will not join Barisan Nasional,” he said in a statement.
The latest decision came after Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, when delivering his keynote speech at the party’s general assembly on Dec 10, offered its friendship towards PAS in building and developing the country according to syariah law and principles.
The presence of PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on the same stage with Najib at the Regional Conference of Islamic Al-Azhar Alumni Malaysia in mid-December 2015 also confirmed the notion that there would be cooperation between the two parties.
