KOTA KINABALU, Jan 5, 2016:

A child rapist who appealed in the High Court here for a reduced sentence, after raping two minors and attempting to rape another, was instead sentenced to additional strokes of the cane, today.

Justice Datuk Nurchaya Arshad meted out the 15 additional strokes, bringing the total to 25, on one Petrus Jung, 31, who admitted to committing the crime at two different districts last year.

Nurchaya, in passing the sentence, said the appellant had ruined his victims’ future and that neither father nor man could forgive him.

Apart from the whipping, Petrus, who appeared calm when the additional sentence was meted against him, would also be spending 55 years behind bars.

On Oct 5 last year, he was sentenced to 20 years’ jail plus six strokes of the rattan by the Sessions Court here on each of the two rape charges framed under Section 376 of the Penal Code.

He also received another 15 years’ jail plus three whippings for another charge under the same Section.

Petrus, who is married with a teenaged son, admitted to committing the offences on the girls aged between 11 and 12 at different jungles in Kota Marudu and Kota Belud between June 17 and July 7, 2015, after luring his victims to ride on his motorcycle.

The rubber tapper then took his victims to the jungle, strangled and hit the girls, before forcing himself on them.

In his appeal to reduce the sentences, Petrus claimed that he was forced to admit to the offences and prayed for leniency as he was remorseful of his act.

He also admitted to being a drunkard and blamed alcohol for making him disoriented, causing his interest towards children to emerge.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali appeared for the prosecution while the appellant was unrepresented.
