KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30, 2015:
Police have declared the peaceful New Year’s eve assembly at the Sg Besi Toll as illegal, urging people not to participate.
Serdang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Razimi Ahmad said police had information on the assembly set to take place tomorrow from 9pm, but it was illegal because it had not received police approval.
“The public is advised not to participate in the assembly because it is against the law under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 because it did not get police approval.
“Any individual who joins the assembly can be prosecuted for offences under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, whereby those committing the offence can be fined not more than RM10,000,” he said in a statement today.
Razimi added that the assembly could also cause severe traffic congestion as many vehicles would be passing the toll to head to the city centre with many New Year’s Eve celebrations being held.
The assembly was organised by Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Youth chief Shazni Munir Ithnin who said some 50,000 people were expected to participate.
It was initially organised to take place at the Jalan Duta Plus toll, however the venue was changed.
Shazni was reported to have said that it was meant to be a peaceful assembly for those wanting to protest against the recent toll hike.
