KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23, 2015:

The High Court here today ordered former PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar to pay RM200,000 in compensatory damages to Jalur Tiga Malaysia (Jati) president Datuk Dr Hasan Mohamed Ali over a defamatory statement made three years ago.

This came after High Court judge Nor Bee Ariffin said the plaintiff had successfully proved that there was malicious intent in a statement made by Mahfuz alleging Hasan of receiving aid from the government.

The court also ordered Mahfuz to pay a cost of RM30,000.

However, Nor Bee disallowed the plaintiff’s claim for exemplary damages.

Hasan and Mahfuz were absent when the verdict was delivered this afternoon.

Hasan was represented by Y.S. Ling while Surya Putra Mohamed Taulan appeared for Mahfuz.

The Jati president filed the defamation suit against Mahfuz in April 2012 after the latter made a defamatory statement that was later carried by several dailies and online portals.

When Hasan took the stand during the trial, he vehemently denied receiving aid from the government including Umno and Barisan Nasional.
