SIBU, Dec 23, 2015:

A woman and three girls were missing after a longboat they were travelling in with five others sank in Long Buyun in the Belaga district late yesterday evening, police said.

Belaga police chief Deputy Superintendent Melay Tingom said they were Sahirza Mahir, 31, Sumitasen Thomas, 15, Adriana Rosnah, 12, and Nur Amrisha, 4.

He said a search-and-rescue operation headed by Sub-Inspector Yusup Naraue had been launched, involving personnel from the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department and Bintulu Department of Civil Defence as well as villagers.

Meanwhile, five people – a man and four women – were rescued following the incident at about 7pm, he said.

Those rescued were Liam Kelilit, 50, and the four women, namely Bungan Nyaleng, 50, Agnes Liam, 33, Olivia Ploma Thomas, 8, and Ayu, 4.

According to police sources, the nine people were returning from a holiday in Belaga town to Rumah Tanjung in Long Pawah when the incident took place.
