Four people were killed, while another was injured after their cars collided at Km 56.7 of the Jalan Sungai Rengit-Kota Tinggi road here, early this morning.
In the 1.30am incident, the driver of a Proton Satria from Sungai Rengit bound for Kota Tinggi was believed to have lost control of the car before crashing into a Proton Saga coming from the opposite direction.
The deceased in the Proton Satria were identified as Muhamad Rizan Ab Kadir, 34, from Pasir Gudang; Mohd Remey Wahab, 28, from Felda Air Tawar 1, Kota Tinggi and a yet to be identified victim in his 30s.
A woman who was the front passenger in the Proton Saga, Fatimah Yet, 41, from Felda Air Tawar 2, Kota Tinggi was also killed in the accident.
All victims died on the spot due to serious head and body injuries.
Kota Tinggi police chief Superintendent Rahmat Othman said the 43-year-old driver of the Proton Saga, Md Jefri Johari was injured and was sent to Kota Tinggi Hospital for treatment.
“The bodies of the deceased were all also sent to Kota Tinggi Hospital for a post-mortem,” he said today.
Rahmat said initial investigations revealed that the accident was caused by the Proton Satria which lost control and swerved to the opposite lane and collided with the Proton Saga.
“Police are investigating the case under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 for causing death due to reckless driving.”
Meanwhile, a Johor Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the Kota Tinggi fire station immediately dispatched two fire engines to the location after receiving a distress call at 1.45am.
“The teams arrived in 11 minutes and immediately assisted by extricating the victims,” said the spokesperson.
