KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7, 2015:

The account of an alleged Malaysian Islamic State (IS) militant is gaining popularity on social media with more than 2,600 “friends”.

Operating under the Facebook username Muhammad Syam Danielz, the man claims to be a “mujahedeen” fighting alongside the terrorist group in Syria and Iraq.

The account, which has been active since October, showed regular updates posted by Muhammad Syam, which included several photographs of himself together with several other alleged IS fighters.

Information on supposed IS activities as well as apparent terrorist propaganda could also be seen in the string of more than 20 postings.

The latest update, posted earlier today, displayed a photograph of Muhammad Syam with several other assumed Malaysian IS fighters.

In one Facebook posting, Muhammad Syam noted that several of his other social media accounts had been previously flagged and blocked.

Dari awal sy bergabung bersama mujahidin hinggalah sekarang. Dah terlalu banyak facebook sy di blok,” he wrote in an earlier posting dated in November.

(“Since the beginning of my allegiance with the mujahedeen, until today, too many of my Facebook accounts have been blocked.”)

Another posting also mentioned ed several other social media channels through which he could be contacted, namely Instagram and the mobile messaging application, WeChat.

However, based on observations made by The Rakyat Post, these accounts were no longer active.

Observations also identified several netizens who were in support of Muhammad Syam as well as sympathising with the militant group and its cause.

Netizens can bee seen initiating conversation with Muhammad Syam as well as with each other on the terrorist group’s activities as well as making comments in support of IS.

Previously, the mother of a Malaysian IS militant was arrested and charged for supporting terrorist activities on social media.

Singapore news portal, The Straits Times, reported that Azizah Md Yusof, 55, was sentenced to 30 months in prison after she had used a Facebook account to promote her son who had allegedly joined the IS terrorist group in their fight.
