KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6, 2015:
The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) must be accountable for the money it is given.
G25 movement of Malay moderates spokesperson Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin said Jakim must remember that it is being given Muslim and non-Muslim taxpayers’ money.
She said she did not want recent events with Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (Yapeim) to repeat itself.
“We want accountability and we do not want Yapeim kind of hanky-panky using money meant for orphans to go for junkets.
“I do not know if this is considered corruption under the MACC act, but I can say that corruption is the destroyer of morals and is the biggest sin in Islam,” she said at a press conference after a G25 forum on “Islam in a Constitutional Democracy”.
She was worried that Jakim officers might follow suit.
“Do not forget that we are all contributing to their allocation,”
Jakim had recently said that G25 must understand Jakim’s role in assisting the government in Islamic affairs before raising concerns over its annual allocations.
