EVER since he watched Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi in 1983 -– at the tender age of five — Sean Lee became smitten by ‘The Force’.
Subsequently, he became a fan of all things related to the Star Wars movie franchise and started collecting merchandise and gathering with like-minded friends to share their hobby.
Lee is the current president of the Star Wars Malaysia Fan Club (SWMFC), established and registered in 2011.
“The Star Wars franchise is very dear to the world community, with millions of fans. There is a large community of Star Wars fans in Malaysia, made-up of disciplines such as of cosplayers, miniature collectors, as well as gamers,” said Lee.
In conjunction with the upcoming premiere of Star Wars – Episode VII : The Force Awakens, Star Wars Malaysia Fan Club is actively organizing events to spread the ‘force’ and create public awareness of the club’s existence.
To be a member of the club, one need to pay RM60 (adults), which expires on May 4th (Star Wars Day) yearly till renewal.
Junior members – those below 18 years old – pay a one-off registration fee of RM10 which expires when members turn 18.
Members can enjoy perks such as discounts on merchandise at MyToy Amcorp Mall and Bricksmore Sunway Pyramid.
Meeting and making friends with Star Wars fans, exchanging views, showcasing figures, volunteering at events, helping to organize events, electing committee members and even joining the committee are the things SWMFC members can do.
Honorary secretary and director of membership for SWMFC Sanjiv Indran says that there are 600 adult members and 160 juniors as of now.
“Members will get car stickers, buttons and a membership card. Those interested to join as a member can do so at the SWMFC membership registration table at any one of our events. We don’t do online registrations as we need committee members present physically to induct new members,” said Sanjiv.
The club is working with TGV cinemas for a series of events billed ‘Voyage to the Awakening’ to celebrate the upcoming release of the new Star Wars film.
Activities in the series include lightsaber demonstrations, cosplay, and Star Wars movie quizzes where winners get movie tickets for getting correct answers.
The events have been carried out successfully at the Wangsa Walk Mall. The next series will take place at Sunway Pyramid this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, Dec 5 and 6).
The activities will start with cosplay appearance and mall walkabout (2pm), followed by Star Wars Trivia Contest (3pm) and Lightsaber Performance and Demonstration (4pm) at the mall’s TGV Cinema.
Members of the public will also find that this is their best chance to get more information on membership.
