KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28, 2015:
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin stressed that the Umno supreme council was acting within its authority in its decision to expel Gopeng Wanita Umno division chief Datuk Hamidah Osman from the party.
Commenting on the statement made by Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who criticised and questioned the council’s action to terminate Hamidah, Khairy said that the council had the power to do so.
”The supreme council has the ultimate authority to determine any such disciplinary action.
“Although we do have a disciplinary board, the highest authority within Umno is the supreme council.
”I don’t see any problems in the decision by the supreme council to fire Hamidah,” he said in a press conference during the Bumiputera Fund Convention, today.
Meanwhile, when asked to comment on the statement made by Hamidah after her sacking stating that democracy in Umno was “dead”, the Khairy said that Umno is the “most democratic” political party in Malaysia as leadership selections are made from the supreme council level, all through the division level.
“There are many who criticise Umno leadership that weren’t fired, she was terminated for crossing the line.”
The Rembau lawmaker also added that discipline must exist within party members within a democratic system and those who go against the rules must be dealt with.
“This is a political party, not a market, discipline is necessary.
“If anyone breaches the rules, action must taken,” he explained.
