KUALA LUMPUR, NOV 25, 2015:India’s Idea Cellular in which the Axiata Group has a stake of about 19.8%, is set to acquire radio spectrum in two service areas from Videocon Telecommunications Ltd for Rs3,310 crore (RM2.14 billion). The telecom service areas are Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh (West). This deal is for a quantum of 2×5 MHz contiguous blocks of 1800 MHz in each service area, with the right to use the spectrum until December 2032. Idea, which is a unit of the Aditya Birla Group and India’s third-biggest mobile phone operator, intends to use the spectrum block for deployment of 4G (LTE) services in these service areas, Aditya Birla said in a statement. After completion of this transaction, Idea would have a full range of mobility services across 2G (GSM), 3G (HSPA) and 4G (LTE) technologies in all of its eight leadership markets of Maharashtra and Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh (West). India is the world’s second-biggest market by number of mobile customers.
