BACHOK, Nov 18, 2015:
A senior citizen was beaten to death with a stick and bamboo, believed to be by his own son, in an incident at Kampung Baru Hujung Repek in Jelawat, here, today.
Police said the victim, 71-year-old Yasa Muda, was said to have been hit on the head repeatedly by his 32-year-old son, who is believed to be suffering from mental illnesses, in the compound of his home.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said police received information on the incident at 5.30am but believe that the tragedy had taken place earlier.
He explained that when police arrived at the location, the suspect was at home and had tried to escape.
“When we tried to detain him, the suspect behaved aggressively, resulting in a struggle. However, he was subsequently arrested.
“Initial investigations revealed that the suspect is the victim’s son and holds an OKU (disabled) card issued by the Welfare Department, and he is categorised with a mental disability,” Mazlan said at a press conference at the Kelantan police headquarters today.
He added that the suspect has been remanded for further investigations for causing death.
The victim’s remains were sent to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospotal for a post-mortem.
“We will investigate the motive for the incident because it was said to have happened suddenly.”
