CHENNAI, Nov 16, 2015:
Steady rain in most parts of coastal Tamil Nadu due to a depression over Bay of Bengal put normal life out of gear on Monday. Floods have so far claimed 59 lives in the state, reported the Hindustan Times.
As many as 15 district administrations, including Chennai, have declared a holiday for schools and colleges.
The India Meteorological Department said in a bulletin on Sunday that the well-marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal adjoining Sri Lanka persisted and “it is likely to move north-westwards towards Tamil Nadu coast and would concentrate into a depression during next 24 hours”.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has offered her condolences to the bereaved and announced four lakh rupees (RM26,500) from the Disaster Relief Fund to each family.
In many areas, fallen trees disrupted vehicular traffic. Civic officials have pressed into service high-powered pumps to remove water from subways and inundated residential areas. For more pictures and video go to: http://www.hindustantimes.com/india/heavy-rains-continue-in-tamil-nadu-schools-colleges-closed-today/story-fbo1PSLIroEeJLRdxuyyhM.html
