KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12, 2015:

The sedition charge against Mohd Ali Baharom was dropped as police could not come up with evidence of the alleged inflammatory remarks, the Attorney-General said.

In an exclusive interview with The Malaysian Insider, Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali stressed that without the evidence, he was unable to pursue the case.

“The actual recording was not enough. It is only a few seconds. We missed the ‘seditious’ part,” Apandi was quoted by the news portal as saying.

He also revealed that he had instructed the police to gather more evidence and the men in blue allegedly said they could not find more.

Mohd Ali, or Ali Tinju as he is referred to had allegedly made a speech prior to a riot outside Low Yat Plaza in July.

Apandi’s decision to drop the case hit a sour note with many, including MCA and Opposition politicians.

The AG was subsequently accused of double standards, although Apandi rubbished the claim, stressing that based on the investigation papers, there was insufficient evidence.

“This makes things difficult. I don’t look at this fellow as ‘Ali Tinju’, I don’t even know him. But if there’s not enough evidence, there’s just not enough evidence,” TMI reported Apandi as saying.
