KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5, 2015:
DAP’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) member Tony Pua cannot talk about 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) even in the Parliament, says PAC chairman Datuk Hasan Arifin today.
Clarifying the confusion surrounding the gag order on the Petaling Jaya Utara Member of Parliament, Hasan said it was clear from Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia’s ruling yesterday that Pua can’t speak about 1MDB outside the committee at all.
“No, it’s clear from the Speaker’s ruling. He can’t speak about it even in Parliament.
“He (Pandikar) gave an example of the Australian Parliament where they are even worse in their ruling, so I maintain the Speaker’s ruling.
“Tony cannot make public statements on 1MDB. It is very difficult to differentiate between the things he said that are based on public knowledge and what he says are based on PAC meetings,” added Hasan, reiterating that as PAC chairman, he will follow whatever ruling set by the Speaker.
The past few days have seen an ongoing debate on whether or not Pua could engage with 1MDB president Arul Kanda Kandasamy in a televised debate on the national sovereign fund.
Pua had initially dared Arul Kanda to a debate, which the latter accepted but placed a condition that Pua would have to resign from the PAC first.
Later on, however, Arul Kanda had a change of heart and announced that he accepted Pua’s challenge unconditionally, stating his willingness to appear in a televised debate with Pua.
However, Pandikar ruled that Pua could not proceed with the debate as long as he remained in the PAC.
The Speaker had also strongly said he would resign from his post as Dewan Rakyat Speaker should the debate proceed with Pua in it.
