KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4, 2015:
Parliament Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia reiterated his stand that if the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) debate between Petaling Jaya Utara Member of Parliament Tony Pua and 1MDB chief Arul Kanda Kandasamy were to go ahead before investigations were concluded, he would step down as Speaker.
He said he would allow the debate if the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) proceedings were concluded to avoid tarnishing the integrity of Parliament.
“It is clear that my decision does not prevent the debate, but it should be held after proceedings are concluded, which I believe will be within this session.
“What I do not understand is why it can’t be postponed until after the report is out. If the debate happens this Friday or coming Monday, I will not be the Speaker anymore.
“This is my stand, no matter what is debated, it will not change my decision,” he said when giving an explanation to Pua in Parliament.
He also stated that Pua being dropped from PAC was no longer an issue.
He said this after Bagan Member of Parliament Lim Guan Eng stood up to ask for an explanation regarding his decision.
‘I do not want a conflict of interest to occur as you (Pua) bring up the 1MDB issue the most.
“Even if Pua is not the one who debates, Arul is also a witness and this is why I do not want to permit the debate.”
