KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27, 2015:
Controversial political figure Ummi Hafilda Ali said she was saddened to see her “friend” Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan arrested for lodging a report over 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
“Of course, I can’t say much on whether it should be done to him as I am not a legal adviser, but as a Malaysian, I think it’s a sad thing to have happened to him as I have endured it before,” she told reporters after attending a meeting with the newly-formed Kuasa Suara Rakyat non-governmental organisation at Mutiara Shopping Centre in Jalan Ipoh here.
She recalled the time when she was detained after submitting a 22-page report on then Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s “wrongdoings” to then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“I got the shock of my life when I was arrested by more than 50 policemen two weeks after submitting my report on Aug 5, 1997 and on Aug 17.”
“(This was done) in a very cruel manner as I am not Botak Chin or Kalimuthu, so I know and can imagine what Khairuddin went through which I have also gone through before.
“I was treated like a criminal,” she said, alluding to two of the country’s most notorious gangsters, Wong Swee Chin (better known as Botak Chin) and P. Kalimuthu (“Bentong Kali”) respectively.
Khairuddin was arrested at his home in Mont Kiara here last Friday in connection with investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The former Batu Kawan Umno chief was later released after being remanded since last Saturday, only to be re-arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012 for 28 days.
