KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10, 2015:
The establishment of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) by Datuk Seri Najib Razak is the same as what was done by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when he established Putrajaya Holdings to develop the country’s administrative capital.
Making the claim in a video clip lasting nearly seven minutes, Umno’s Kok Lanas assemblyman Datuk Alwi Che Ahmad blamed social media for making negative reports on 1MDB and claimed that this could inhibit development plans by the Prime Minister.
The video footage, which is being circulated on social media and shared on a Facebook page, Info 1MDB Anda, is believed to have been recorded at a function last July.
Alwi, who is also chairman of the Agricultural Development Authority (Kada), said efforts by Najib and Dr Mahathir were different in terms of the role played by social media because during Dr Mahathir’s time people were more trusting of information from relevant sources.
“At that time, if there had been Whatsapp and Telegram, I am sure that projects such as Putrajaya and KLCC Twin Towers could not be carried out.
“I am confident that even the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) could not be built with so many people suddenly becoming experts.
“How many people opposed Dr Mahathir? Where is the need to do high-rise buildings? KLCC? KLIA?
“But at that time, there was no social media. Ultimately, the projects went through and we can see their success today.”
Alwi explained that Dr Mahathir and Najib had the same goal of wanting to form a business entity for the Malays.
He said that what distinguished the two was the strategy because each had its own business model.
“Before, when Dr Mahathir wanted to develop Putrajaya, he took RM2 billion from Petronas’ money, that is public money.
“Now, the income derived from Putrajaya Holdings is RM1 billion a year from the rental of buildings made via Petronas funding.
“1MDB is the same as Putrajaya Holdings. At this time, we cannot take money from Petronas because the money is not there.
“And so Datuk Seri Najib established this 1MDB with only RM1 million taken from public funds.”
He said 1MDB would contribute to the public because the company controlled almost all Independent Power Producers (IPPs) that generate electricity for public use.
