PUTRAJAYA, Sept 8, 2015:
The government has no view on the Red T-shirt rally but Umno will not stop its members from joining the Sept 16 rally as it was their “right” to attend, says Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He also said it was up to police to manage the approval of the rally.
“It is organised by an NGO and of course that NGO will invite Umno to participate.
“I think it is the individual right of Umno members to attend,” he told reporters at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Department today when asked if Umno would allow its members to join in the rally.
As for whether the rally would be allowed to take place, he said: “In terms of operations, we leave it 100% to the police to take action, especially in terms of giving permits and also the enforcement work if the permit is given.”
The Red T-shirts rally, also dubbed the “Maruah Melayu” rally, is slated to take place on Sept 16 to counter the Bersih 4.0 rally that took place on Aug 29-30.
While the organisers are not known, those who indicated their intent to participate included Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos, who said the Bersih 4 rally had “angered the Malays”.
Bera Umno division chief Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also said he would attend the rally if invited.
