BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 7, 2015:
A police corporal suffered serious injuries to his head and torso after he was assaulted by a gang of factory workers who also made off with his gun.
Fortunately, the firearm was later recovered.
In the 6pm incident, which took place yesterday, Corporal Khosim Hat, 56, was going on his rounds after he received a tip-off that illegal gambling activities were taking place in Jalan Besar, Bukit Tengah.
A group of men, believed to be foreign workers at a nearby factory, pounced on him from behind and manhandled him before snatching his gun.
According to Penang Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Zakaria Ahmad, the victim, who had served for more than 20 years in the police force, suffered cuts to his face, a broken right rib and received five stitches at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital.
“Although badly injured, he managed to make a distress call to the Bukit Tengah police station.
“A team of policemen rushed over to the scene and saw him lying on the ground covered in blood and took him to hospital in an ambulance,” said Zakaria when contacted.
He said the gang also fled with a Walther P99 which they snatched from Khosim.
“Swift investigations led police to round up 23 foreign workers from Vietnam, Myanmar and Nepal, 18 of whom are working at a factory in Bukit Tengah, last night itself.
“Out of the 23 arrested, five were women.
“The gun was also recovered by police,” added Zakaria.
The case, said Zakaria, is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
