JOHOR BARU, Sept 1, 2015:
A teenage mother is facing a murder probe after her newly-born baby was found dead in Kampung Plentong Baru near here yesterday.
The 18-year-old unwed mother is now under police custody at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (SAH) where she is receiving treatment after giving birth.
Police had initially classified the case as a “Sudden Death Report” after a police report was lodged at the Permas Jaya police station on Saturday morning by the teenager’s father.
Later, the post-mortem report revealed evidence that the male baby may have died due to blunt force trauma to his jaw .
It was learnt that the teenager had given birth in her family home in Kampung Plentong Baru at 6pm on Friday.
A source familiar with the case said the unplanned childbirth had also shocked the teenager’s 42-year-old father, who was working as a quality control employee in Pasir Gudang.
“The teenager’s father rushed home after he was notified by his wife on their daughter’s sudden childbirth at home.
“The family then waited until the next morning before the father was advised by an imam to lodge a police report,” the source told The Rakyat Post today.
Following the report, police interviewed the family members, while the teenager was admitted to SAH as she was said to be very weak after giving birth.
The baby’s remains were then sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem.
“However, the baby’s cause of death had elements of foul play,” said the source, adding that the Johor Baru Selatan district police Criminal investigation Department had taken over the investigations.
It is understood that police had started building a case on events that led to the death of the newborn baby.
This will cover the period on Friday, when the baby was said to be born, to the next day when a police report was only lodged.
Johor Baru Selatan police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulaiman Salleh confirmed police had re-classified the case and it is now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
“We have detained the teenage mother, who is now in SAH pending her recovery, as a suspect.
“At the same time, police are also looking at other angles such as questioning the suspect’s family members,” he said when contacted.
