KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29, 2015:
The Bersih 4 rally brought out the creative side of Malaysians as images of their theatrics made the rounds across cyberspace.
During the two-day event, several protesters were seen donning costumes and outfits that made them noticeably stand out from the sea of yellow.
In the nation’s capital, someone that supporters are calling the “Bersih Spider-man”, made his appearance at the rally.
Putting his own twist on the popular comic book character, the protester was seen in a yellow-and-black striped Spider-man outfit, synchronising his looks with the overall yellow theme of the rally.
An image posted by Twitter user @FarehaNizam showed the yellow-clad superhero drawing the attention of participants who took the time to pose for photos and mingle with the enthusiastic protester.
Another focus of the crowd was a man fully dressed up as an Arab, complete with jubbah — the traditional Arabian robe — as well as turban, playing the part of a Middle-Eastern “donor”, according to a photo shared by Twitter user @twt_gagalis.
In KUCHING, the Bersih rally there had its own superhero in attendance, as Ultraman joined in the “festivities”.
Posted by Twitter user @eida0109, the Japanese pop-culture icon was seen wowing the crowds, apart from participating in the demonstrations.
“KL has its Spider-man, here in Kuching is Ultraman,” tweeted @eida0109 along with photos at the scene.
Bersih participants around the nation are seen displaying their support for the cause in their own ways such as taking on the Guy Fawkes mask — synonymous in pop culture with the Anonymous hackers movement — as well as creating their own take on cartoon characters like Despicable Me Minions, Pokémon and Angry Birds, all highlighting the “yellow” theme of the rally.
On social media, “Bersih Pickup Lines”, a social media game of adding a Bersih protest theme to witty and cheesy quotes to attract members of the opposite sex, were trending among netizens.
Operating under the hashtag #bersihpickuplines, social media users were seen picking their brains for the most cheeky pick up lines to date.
On Twitter, @NoelMeldan wrote: “My shirt may be yellow but my heart is red hot for you. #BERSIHPickUpLines.”
Meanwhile, @farahwazer said: “Count the police at the dataran, that’s how big my love for you baby. Countless. #BERSIHpickuplines.”
A Facebook user, Jalum Karuchis wrote: “baby, you spark up a revolution like nobody else #bersihpikuplines.”
The Bersih 4.0 rally started around noon yesterday and is expected to end at midnight tonight at the areas surrounding Dataran Merdeka. It is also being held simultaneously in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and Kuching, Sarawak as well as major cities worldwide.
The demonstration also saw former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, along with his wife, making two appearances at the rally, yesterday and today.
Bersih 4.0 demands, this time around, are for clean elections, a corrupt-free government, and the right to protest, strengthening parliamentary democracy and saving the economy.
