PADANG BESAR, Aug 15, 2015:
A water theme park similar to the A’Famosa Water World in Alor Gajah, Malacca would be built here as a tourism product for Perlis.
Titi Tinggi assemblyman Khaw Hock Kong said a four-hectare site in Titi Tinggi had been identified for the project.
He said the park would hopefully woo tourists who use Perlis as a transit, to stay the night before heading to Langkawi or Thailand, and from Thailand to Penang or Kuala Lumpur.
Nevertheless, the project which would be developed by local entrepreneurs is still in the planning stage.
According to Khaw, the electric train service which started operating on July 10 had already impacted positively in the number of tourist arrivals to Padang Besar.
“I expect the number of tourists to Perlis, which is about 2.5 million yearly, to increase with the new product aside from the development of Padang Besar as a Perlis Inland Port (PIP) in the 11th Malaysia Plan,” he said.
He said this to reporters at an Aidilfitri gathering in his constituency last night.
On the construction of a RM200 million hospital in Padang Besar which was recently approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Khaw said the project which was planned in 2008 should not be delayed any longer.
“The project is crucial to support the PIP. Furthermore, residents here number more than 40,000 now and they presently have to travel about 45 minutes to reach Hospital Tuanku Fauziah in Kangar,” he said.
