KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4, 2015:
Ticket sales for Malaysia Airline (MAS) have slipped slightly due to recent media reports that debris from missing Flight MH370 may have been finally found 16 months after it disappeared mysteriously on March 8 last year.
Chief executive officer Christoph Mueller today said at a conference in Sydney that the sales dip “is fuelled in most cases by social media hype”, reported Bloomberg.
He said media coverage on the missing plane’s “search correlates unfortunately but very positively with our demand figures.
“We have been always cooperating with the investigators since day one, and so do we today.”
Mueller however refused to give any further comment about MAS involvement in the recent Paris investigation of the flaperon, which was reportedly found last week washed up on the shore of Reunion Island.
Moving forward, Mueller said: “We will embark as a new carrier and restart a new legal identity on Sept 1. It will cut expenses to a level where the main carrier is competitive with low-cost rivals such as AirAsia, Singapore Airlines’ Scoot and Tiger Airways.”
MAS is now in the midst of a RM6 billion restructuring exercise spearheaded by its sole shareholder Khazanah Nasional Bhd after suffering two tragedies last year – flights MH370 and also MH17, shot down in mid-flight over Ukraine.
